休斯敦大學成立之初為休斯頓初級學院，位于圣哈辛托高中，且僅提供夜校課程，后于1933年，正式認可為四年制的公立大學。在休斯敦大學成立50周年時，休斯敦大學系統(tǒng)成立，休斯敦大學也成為其中規(guī)模最大，建校最早的學校。休斯敦大學每年授予8200個學位，校友至今已有26萬人次。其中 音樂創(chuàng)作人和歌手荒山亮就是校友之一。
